Cumberland County
Cumberland County is located in North Carolina and is part of the Fayetteville, North Carolina Metropolitan Area. The population according to the 2000 census was 302,963.
The county was formed in 1754, and named for Prince William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland. The county has gone through many changes in its geographic size. At one point it ceded area with Johnston and Orange counties to form Wake County. Its western side was sheared off to form Moore county, while the eastern side became Fayette county before quickly being changed back. The northern part wasn’t unaffected either, it later formed Harnett County. Additionally, parts of Cumberland were used to form both Robeson and Hoke counties.
The largest city in the county, Fayetteville, was named in honor of the Marquis de la Fayette.
